Introduction

Welcome to the Dragon Ball Character Guide. This file is intended to introduce you to the many main characters that run around in Akira Toriyama's little universe. If you already know about Dragon Ball, and just want to get a little more background data on the main characters, feel free to jump on in.

For those of you who are new to Dragon Ball, or have never heard of it before, I suggest that you either explore the Anime Files area of Three Steps Over the Edge, or go to the Anime Web Turnpike and check out the MANY Dragon Ball web pages listed there.

The purpose of this guide is to put a face to the names, while also describing only the more important characters that show up in the series. There have been a LOT of incidental characters that eventually were phased out, or killed off, during Dragon Ball's 10 year run. Most of the minor characters aren't worth the disk space required to store a gif of them. Besides, if you want to know the names of EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER to appear in the manga, you only need to visit the Guide Files in my Anime Files area.

Why no entries for GT?

And no, this Guide does not touch on Dragon Ball: GT. This Guide will be long enough, simply covering Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. I have a separate file for DBGT elsewhere on my site.

Explanation of weird markings

Finally, this Guide follows the section breaks that I'd used when I was summarizing the manga: the characters are listed as they appear in the manga, 10 volumes in a block. So, sit back, munch on a senzu seed, and enjoy.

[fa:vxxx -- First Appears in Volume xxx.]
[oa:vxxx -- Only appearance is in Volume xxx.]
[la:vxxx -- Last Appears in Volume xxx.]

Normally, good guys continue to appear throughout the series, and minor bad guys don't last for more than one volume. The exceptions will get an entry for la:vxxx. However, the major bad guy exception is Tao-pie Pie, who shows up in the TV series periodically.

Dragon Ball Character Guide, Part 1

Son Gokuu:
The naive, super-powerful young boy. Carries an expanding staff (the nyoi bo) he received from his grandfather, and rides a hyper-fast cloud (Kintoun) that Kamesennin gave him in book 1. Kamesennin got Kintoun from Kami-sama (god.) [fa:v1]

Buruma:
The spunky young girl that first shows up looking for the 7 Dragon Balls. She's very high-tech, and later shown to be the daughter of the founder of Capsule Corp. (the company that makes the Hoi Poi capsules. These capsules can be carried in a case or pocket, and expand to provide the user with cars, campsites, and weapons.) Wants the Dragon Balls to wish for a boyfriend. [fa:v1] In volume 6, her name is spelled "Bulma," but with it pronounced this way, you lose the joke where someone mistakes her for "bloomers."

Yamcha:
The longhaired male teenager who wants the Dragon Balls to wish for a girlfriend. Strong and fast, with a wolf-style martial arts attack, but is very shy around women. Starts out as one of Gokuu's enemies. [fa:v1]

Kamesennin Mutenroushi:
The dirty old man with the turtle shell on his back. Wise, powerful, and subject to severe nose bleeds. He is a master martial artist, and the man who teaches Gokuu how to do Kamehame-ha. He is at least 300 years old, and is the past master of the Tenkai-ichi Budoukai (Tournament to see who's the greatest fighter on Earth. In the tournaments, he is disguised as "Jackie Chun" (a pun on Jackie Chan.) [fa:v1]

NOTE: Sennin means "master", so the old man is "turtle master." This word is used more often starting with volume 8.

Magical Cow King. Massive man with extended goggles over his eyes. Well-known leader in this land, and highly respected. [fa:v1]

Pilaf:
A short, blue-skinned guy wearing a cap with Dragon Ball One on it. Has plans for world domination, and lots of money. Hates Gokuu, and has very bad luck. [fa:v2] [la:v13]

Mai:
Pilaf's female bodyguard. Very loyal, and attractive, but not really brave, lucky, or sexually experienced. (Blushed easily when Pilaf threatened to torture Buruma by making kissing sounds at her.) [fa:v2] [la:v13]

Shenlon:
The Dragon God summoned when the 7 Balls are brought together. Initially, Shenlon can only grant one wish. Then, the Balls fly apart and can not be used for one full year. [fa:v2]

The very violent, highly mercenary blond woman that is first seen running away from the police after having robbed a bank. [fa:v3] [la:v16]
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Ranchi (pronounced "Lunch"):
Kushami's "other half." A gentle, kind, nice brunette who moves in with Kamesennin "and the rest of the boys." When she sneezes, Ranchi turns into Kushami, or turns back. Somehow, Kushami always manages to produce automatic weapons during her change- over. Eventually leaves Kamesennin to live with Tenshinhan and Chao-zu. Finally, forgotten about entirely. At the end of the TV series, she is shown driving a delivery truck for a living. [fa:v3] [la:v16]

Kuririn:
Short, bald, and with 6 spots on his forehead instead of a nose, Kuririn is introduced as a boastful little would-be fighter who wants Kamesennin to train him. Later becomes Gokuu's closest friend. His home town is Ouringi, which means "many tree temple." [fa:v3]
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Tao-pie Pie:
The Chinese kung-fu master with a braided pony-tail, and the words "kill you" on the back of his jacket. One of Gokuu's most formidable foes, and one of the few that repeatedly shows up in later episodes after he's been killed off. Favorite mode of transport is to chop down a tree, throw it, and then leap on it to fly away. [fa:v8, although is mentioned several times in volume 7.]

Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Uranai Baba:
The little old crone who floats around atop her crystal ball. She has a very elaborate estate/fighting complex where she will answer any question for a fee. Either you pay 10 million zenii, or fight her five warriors. Apparently, no one has ever had a question answered by winning the combats. Is Kamesennin's older sister. [fa:v9]
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Son Gohan:
Gokuu's dead grandfather. (Also the name of Gokuu's and Chichi's son, much later on in the series.) [oa:v9] Son Gohan had been wandering out in the woods when he discovered baby Gokuu, and adopted the child. While Gokuu is an alien, Son Gohan is very definitely human.
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Tenshinhan:
3-eyed student of Tsurusennin. Tall, muscular, very strong fast, and nasty. In the TV series, he is shown, with Chao-zu, to be a thief and fraud (he brings a certain monster into town, the monster causes damage, and Tenshinhan then gets paid money for chasing the monster away.) Tenshin faces Gokuu in the Tenkai-ichi Budoukai initially as an enemy, but he eventually becomes friends with the heroes. [fa:v10]
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Chao-zu:
White-faced dwarf, and one of the few fighters who are shorter than Kuririn. Uses the Dodon attack, and has ESP powers that allow him to fly, freeze opponents in place, and manipulate objects. [fa:v10]

Dragon Ball Character Guide, Part 2

Piccolo:
AKA The Great Demon King Piccolo. A huge, shrivelled green monster with 2 antenna. Wants the Dragon Balls to regain his youth, and he needs the list of Tenkaichi-budoukai fighters so that he can kill them all off. Had been imprisoned by Kamesennin's old master, Mutaito-sama, and released by Pilaf. [fa:v12]
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Yajirobee:
Samurai. Long, shaggy hair, and wears a yukata (a simple top garment sort of like a robe) and sandals. A master swordsman with an appetite that rival's Gokuu's. Yajirobee eventually climbs to the top of Karin Tower and becomes a sort of partner to Senpyou. [fa:v12]
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Mister Popo:
The little, fat black guy wearing a Turkish outfit, living in the Palace above Karin Tower. Is Kami-sama's (God's) sole servant, and is more powerful than anyone that Gokuu's fought before. [fa:v14]
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Ma Junior:
The reincarnation of Piccolo as a younger demon. [fa:v14] Being a demon, Ma Junior can perform various kinds of magic, such as creating new clothing, and such. Eventually, the magic tricks get discarded, and Piccolo resorts to them only when he needs his trademark attack: Makankousappou (Industrial Light Attack). It's very powerful, but it requires some time to build up the energy, first.
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Kami-sama:
(Kami means "god," and that is the reading for the kanji on his tunic.) Occupant of the island floating high above Karin Tower. Most powerful character yet. Eventually, we learn that Kami-sama is an alien from the planet Namek. When he'd come to Earth, and was to take on the role of Earth's God, he had to strip all of the evil from himself -- that evil became Demon King Piccolo. Later, Kami-sama and Piccolo merge again to undergo a power up. Since Kami-sama is just a title, another Namek -- Dende -- takes on the role and becomes the new Kami-sama. Which is important, because Kami-sama is the one that gives Shenlon its powers. [fa:v14]

Radditz:
Saiya-jin (race of were-monkey warriors from a distant planet.) Gokuu's older brother. [oa:v17] Killed while fighting Gokuu and Piccolo.
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Young Gohan:
At the point when Radditz first appears, Gohan is 4 years old, and it is the first time that we ever see him. The boy had been named after Gokuu's step-grandfather. As a Saiya-jin halfbreed, Gohan is capable of becoming much more powerful than Gokuu (if he trains properly.) After Gokuu dies (Gokuu was holding Radditz to give Piccolo time to kill both of them), Piccolo takes Gohan under his wing and trains the boy (including ripping out Gohan's tail by the roots.) Gohan does become stronger with time, but because Chi Chi forces him to keep studying for school, he never really learns how to enjoy fighting. [fa:v17]

Kakarot:
Gokuu's Saiya-jin name. [fa:v17]

Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Vejiita:
The strongest Saiya-jin ever. Very ruthless, cruel, and arrogant. Hates being weaker than any other creature. Smaller than Gokuu, with wild black hair and a receding hairline. Prince from the Saiya-jin Planet, Vejiita. Initially, Vejiita uses a mechanical device called a "scouter" to determine an enemy's "combat power", and for communication with other Saiya-jin. Later, he learns how to sense combat power directly, and he stops using the scouter. [fa:v17]

Enmadaiou-sama:
"King of Hell." The huge gate keeper god that determines where the dead are to go in the after-life. [fa:v18]
Return to

Kaiou-sama:
"World King." Looks like a humanoid catfish. Lives on a little planet with a strong gravity well, at the end of the Snake Road, in heaven. He's not so much of a fighter, as a fighter's coach. With his antennae, Kaiou-sama can telepathically contact others through out the galaxy. [fa:v18]
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Bubbles and Gregory:
Kaiou's pet monkey and pet grasshopper. Bubbles is very strong and fast. Gregory exists only in the TV series, and not in the manga. [fa:v18]

Dragon Ball Character Guide, Part 3

Freeza:
Lizard-like alien. VERY strong, and uses very polite language. First appears while riding a hover-chair. Wants the Dragon Balls to wish for immortality. [fa:v21] [la:v29] Just for kicks, Freeza keeps two minions for his dirty work -- Dodoria and Zarbon.
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Second-stage Freeza:
Freeza is a changling, having several forms that mask the power of the succeeding form. This form is sort of a big horned demon. [oa:v25]
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Third-stage Freeza:
An extension of the Second-stage Freeza: more powerful, but looks like a parody of the creature from Alien.
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Fourth-Stage Freeza:
The ultimate form, this is what Freeza originally looked like. It's been a long time since he's had this shape. [fa:v26] [la:v28] Presumably, he gets killed by Gokuu during the battle that destroys the original Namek planet.
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Cyborg Freeza:
In actuality, Freeza was rescued by his father, partially mechanized, and made much stronger and faster than before. [oa:v28] So, he ultimately gets sliced and diced by Future Trunks.

Dende:
The young Namek-jin that Gohan saves from Freeza. [fa:v22] Dende is a healer, who grows up to become the next Kami-sama for Earth.

Bardock:
Many years earlier, about the time that baby Goku was shot off into space to destroy Earth, his father -- Bardock -- fought Freeza in the final battle on planet Vejiita. Father of Son Gokuu (Kakarot) and Radditz. Killed by Freeza. [oa:v26]
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Super Saiya-jin Gokuu:
The hair stands up and turns gold, there's a big aura of yellow energy, and the power is incredible. He attains this stage after watching Freeza explode Kuririn. Later on, Gokuu discovers SSJ 2 and SSJ 3: more hair and more power. [fa:v27]
Return to

Super Saiya-jin Vejiita:
Stronger than Gokuu, attained by training at 450 g for 3 years. [fa:v29]
Return to

Future Trunks:
The golden-haired boy from the future. Carrying a sword, and wearing a Capsule Corp. jacket, he destroys Cyborg Freeza, and warns the heroes of the threat that awaits them in 3 years. Is the son of Buruma and Vejiita. [fa:v28] By travelling through time, Future Trunks changes the past and creates multiple timelines. After Cell is defeated in the new past that he creates, Trunks returns to the future and kills the cyborgs #17 and #18, and Cell, that terrorized his future world.

Dr. Gero:
A mad scientist that had worked from the crime syndicate Red Ribbon. Gokuu destroyed Red Ribbon early on in the series, but Dr. Gero survived and went on to perfect his creations -- androids specifically designed to kill Gokuu.
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

#17:
The young male android created by Dr. Gero. In Trunk's future, #17 and 18 both terrorize Earth, and destroy everyone before travelling to the past to kill Vejiita and the rest of the heroes. Wears a Red Ribbon jersey, torn jeans, and a yellow scarf. Has earrings and shoulder-length black hair. VERY strong. Is consumed by Cell in a later volume. [fa:v29] [la:31] However, Shenlon ressurects him, and #17 goes on to become an outback hunter/trapper.
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

#18:
Female android companion to #17. Is also consumed by Cell, but later gets spit back out, and becomes slightly more normal. Settles down with Kuririn and has his baby -- a girl named Marron. [fa:v29]
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

#16:
The big, good-looking hulk with red eyes. Originally fights alongside #17 and #18. Gets repaired by Buruma and becomes a good guy. Gentle by nature, he dies in the fight against Cell. Being a pure robot, #16 can not be resurrected by Shenlon. [fa:v30]
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Cell:
The biological weapon created by Dr. Gero. Cell steals Future Trunks' time machine to arrive in the past. It contains some of the cell samples from most of the heroes. Just needs to consume #17 and #18 to become complete. [fa:v30] First-Stage: He looks like a cross between a lizard, a scorpion, and a human.

Third-Stage Cell:
After consuming #18, he's now a gleaming white, sleak humanoid, with a touch of lizard. He is virtually undefeatable, can destroy the universe, and has all of the abilities that all of the heroes have, including Kamehame-ha. [fa:v32] [la:35]

Dragon Ball Character Guide, Part 5

Mister Satan:
Professional wrestler, and world figure. He crashed the Cell Game, intending to beat up Cell and claim himself the greatest hero in the world. However, while Gohan had actually vaporized Cell, the rest of the world didn't get to see that part. So, Satan boasted that he's the one that killed Cell, and he is now the leader of Satan City and "winner" of the "Cell Game."

Teenage Gohan:
He's now 16, and has been studying under Chi Chi's tutilage. He starts out the book by going to his new school in Satan City.

The Golden-Haired Warrior:
Gohan's first alter ego. While is strong enough to defeat Cell, and normal criminals are no problem for him, Gohan chooses to fight crime in Saiya-jin form as a kind of disguise. It's not a very good disguise, so he instead becomes...
Return to

The Great Saiya-man:
Gohan's alter-ego. He wants to protect his identity at school, so he gets a costume from Buruma, and spends lots of time in front of the mirror, practicing his poses.

Young Trunks:
Son of Buruma and Vejiita. Age 8. Slightly faster and more powerful than Goten, and already a Super Saiya-jin.

Beederu:
Satan's daughter. Very strong, and leader of the city's amature law enforcement service. Is in Gohan's class in school, and coerces Gohan into entering the next Tenkai-ichi Budoukai with her. [fa:v36] By the end of the series, she and Gohan have a daughter -- Pan. Gohan settles down to become a scholar, but he and Beederu do still work together as the crime fighting Great Saiya Team.

Ireeza:
The short blond-haired classmate who develops a lust for Gohan. [fa:v36] Disappears after a while.
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Goten:
Gohan's younger brother. Is already faster and more powerful than Gokuu or Gohan had been at that age. Looks like Gokuu used to. Age 7. Became a Super Saiya-jin while practicing fighting techniques with Chi-Chi. (She's shocked that Goten is already a "juvenile delinquent".) [fa:v36]
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Kaiou-shin:
Kaiou God. Is using Gohan as bait to track down Magical Being Buu. Was the only Kaiou-shin to survive the original combat that resulted in Buu being sealed within It's shell. Appears at the Budoukai in the guise of a young punk with a mohawk. [fa:v37] Note that Kaiou-sama is one of 4 Kaious. North, South, East, and West. There is a Great Kaiou that rules over the four, and is effectively the God of the afterlife. But, even the Kaious have their own Gods, and there were 4 Kaiou-shins a long time ago.
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Kibit:
Kaiou-shin's big, muscular assistant. Is a healer in the same vein as Dende. [fa:v37]
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Babi-di:
The Black World's strongest mage. Looks thin, old, and wrinkled, but has frightening magic powers. Son of the wizard who created Buu several hundred years ago. His only real hold over Buu is that fact that he knows the spell that can seal up Buu again. [fa:v38] [la:v40]
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Bibi-di:
Babi-di's father. He'd originally created Buu, and it took all of the exisiting Kaiou-shin's to defeat Buu in the war 300+ years ago time. Just a name, Bibi-di died in the war, and is never shown in the flesh.
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Darbura:
The tall, demonic looking fighter working for Babi Dee. Buu turns him into a cookie and eats him. [fa:v38] [la:v39]
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Buu:
A great, magical creature that Babi Dee wants to reactivate. He needs lots of combat energy (with a twist of evil) to wake up. Kaiou-shin is terrified of him, and with Kibit, has been trying to locate Buu for a very long time. Buu is first shown in a large nutshell, located in the bottom level of a rocket that's buried out in the countryside. When released, Buu resembles the Marshmellow Man from the Ghost Busters movie. Buu is like a spoiled baby, with awesome magical powers. His favorite pastime is to turn his victims into snack foods, and then eat them. (AKA: Majin Buu, or Magical Creature Buu.) [fa:v39]
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Dai Kaiou-shin:
A faded Kaiou-shin, whose name is never given. He had been trapped in the Zet Sword by some other creature, for 15 generations. Claims to have a talent that will help Gohan defeat Buu. Is very weak, and pitiful. [fa:v40] Later on, Gokuu calls him Dai Kaiou-shin (or "Great Kaiou-shin", which would effectively elevate him to "God of All Gods").
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Kaiobit:
Dai Kaoiu-shin tells Kibit and Kaiou-shin to switch earrings. When this happens, the two of them fuse into Kaioubit: permanently.
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Gotenks:
The character that results when Goten and Trunks complete their Fusion. Has an outfit similar to Buu's, and while initially cool-looking, is still no match for the monster. [fa:v40]
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Majin Buu:
This is what everyone was really afraid of. Buu can do a power upgrade on Itself. The first Buu we see is "Stupid Buu", a childish, naive version. Later, "Stupid Buu" creates "Evil Buu", which is a thin, starved, nasty version of Itself. Soon after, "Evil Buu" eats "Stupid Buu" to become "New Buu" (AKA: Majin Buu. That is, there is no real name change.) "New Buu" is lean and mean, loves killing, but is still very uneducated. More powerful than Cell, but with no purpose at all, "New Buu" is the ultimate mindless destruction. [fa: v40]
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

SSJ-3 Gotenks:
In Fusion form, Gotenks can switch to Super Saiya-jin 3; his hair grows down to his butt, his face becomes leaner, and his eyebrow ridges stand out more. In terms of power, he completely dwarfs Piccolo, and easily rivals Gokuu's SSJ-3 level. Gokuu comments that Gotenks has achieved SSJ-3 long, long before he ever could, and much more easily. [fa:v41]
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Mystical Gohan:
While Gohan, Trunks, and Gokuu are all endeavoring to undergo major power-ups via major training, Gohan had remained more interested in studying than fighting, after the Cell Game. However, to become more of a match for Buu, Gohan allows himself to be the focus of Dai Kaiou-shin's MAGICAL power-up. At full power, Gohan looks more elvish, but he's still no real match for the monster.
Return to
Map Image Listing or Table of Contents

Vejit:
Gokuu and Vejiita finally merge using Dai Kaiou-shin's earrings. Vejit looks like Gokuu, with black hair standing in Super Saiya-jin form, and a cross between Gokuu's and Vejiita's fighting uniforms. The result is a street boxer with dangly earrings.

The True Buu:
A long time ago, the original Buu had absorbed two of the Kaiou-shins, which had resulted in It's becoming the Fat Buu that was trapped in the Ball and released by Babi-di. Now, with the cysts of Fat Buu, Piccolo, Gohan, Goten, and Trunks removed from It, the True Buu looks like a sullen, evil little Buu child (about 12 years old.) It is completely ruthless, and easily destroys Earth with a house-sized energy ball.

Uubu:
A little black-skinned country boy, with a shaggy mohawk. Looks very nervous, but determined. Is actually the reincarnation of evil Majin Buu. [oa:v42]
