Koutarou Magaritooru! Character Guide

Introduction

Koutarou Magaritooru!, or "Koutarou, Break Through!" is a slap-stick martial arts manga by Tatsuya Hirota. It ran for 12 years, before the final storyline wrapped up, and the series metamorphosed into the NEW Koutarou Magaritooru! There was a second sequel, called Kotarou L, which was left unfinished after Hirota fell ill after 8 volumes.

The original manga detailed the adventures of "anything goes" karate black belt Shindou Koutarou, a high school student who spends more time hiding in the girls' locker rooms, than he does actually attending classes. At times, Shindou has to fight against the biggest, baddest villians the school, Japan, and even the world have to offer. After each battle, some of the villians become friends, and others become dead.

The Manga, and Dragon Ball

Koutarou predates, and has outlasted Dragon Ball. Both manga share many similarities -- slapstick martial artists, toilet humor and risque jokes. But, in many ways, I consider Koutarou to be a better manga than Dragon Ball. One explanation for Dragon Ball's greater popularity is that DB ran in Shonen Jump, an amazingly popular weekly magazine aimed at young adults, and KM ran in Shonen Magazine, a weekly that aimed at an older audience. That is, more people read Jump than Magazine, and many of the titles running in Jump eventually get turned into anime. Koutarou has never been animated, but there was a live action movie, and a couple "soundtrack" CD's have been printed up.

The Character Guide

In the course of 12 years, lots of characters can come and go. This character guide includes listings of all of the major characters, and several of the minor ones that actively contributed to the story. I am including thumbnail sketches for the more important characters, ignoring the minor ones because of time considerations.

The NEW Koutarou

Hirota, like Toriyama, kept escalating the stakes of each new battle. First, it was the fate of Shindou's long ponytail. Then, it was the fate of his Karate Club, the fate of his school, and finally -- the fate of Japan. After defeating the best karate masters the world had to offer, Hirota decided to end the series.

But, Hirota didn't want to throw away his Koutarou universe, so he added "Shin" (NEW) to the title, and started setting things up to force Shindou into learning Judo. The stakes have been scaled back, and the battle grounds have been changed, but Shindou is his same old Hentai self, and the fights are better than ever.

Again, after Shin ended, Hirota discovered that he still had one or two tales to tell, and started up Koutarou L, pitting our hero and his mother against American ninjas. Unfortunately, Hirota fell ill and stopped writing after volume 8 came out.

From Guide Part 1 (v1 - v16)

Tsurugamine Gakuen:
The high school that everyone attends, and that the early combats occur in. Is huge, and has everything one would expect of a school in a gag manga.
Return to the TOC

Fuuki-iinkai:
Morality committee, or decency league. This group includes Tenkouji and Mayumi, and a large cast of nameless minions (this is used in one gag, when two of the minions -- who commonly appear along with Tenkouji -- are referred to by facial features, because they've never been given names.) They usually keep the peace on the school grounds, but spend most of their time chasing Koutarou.
Return to the TOC

Jakotsukai:
The Snake Bones: Beni Bari's original gang. Controls about 1/3 of the school grounds, but few people are aware of its existence. The main HQ is located in the big school clock tower.
Return to the TOC

Hage:
Baldie. The one word that Tenkouji absolutely despises, and the one that Koutarou loves to use.
Return to the TOC

Tonfa:
A martial arts weapon, similar to a police night stick, with a handle along the side.
Return to the TOC

Nunchukus:
Shindou's favorite weapon, and one used extensively in Bruce Lee's movies: two pieces of hardwood connected together by a piece of rope.

===================================

The Main Characters

===================================

Koutarou Shindou:
Long-haired karate expert. Uses everything from kung-fu to ninja techniques. High school age, but never really attends classes. As much of a crime fighter as Son Gokuu is. His father is finally revealed in volume 8 as the master of a karate school in America (but we don't get to see his face.) Shindou runs a dojo on the school grounds, but rarely has any students. He is an incredible hentai, and spends most of his time raiding the girls' locker rooms, stealing panties, and running around with them on his head. [fa:v1] [continuing]
Return to the TOC

Mayumi Watase:
Attractive, dark-haired class leader. In charge of the school's morality committee (Fuuki-iinkai) she starts out spending most of her time trying to cut Koutarou's hair, and to punish him for being the school's biggest pervert. They are not exactly lovers, but their relationship is close to that of Ranma and Akane. They have known each other since childhood, and Koutarou will sacrifice his life to protect Mayumi. In the meantime, he concentrates on increasing his collection of Mayumi's panties. In the earlier volumes, Mayumi demonstrated a certain amount of martial arts skill, but this disappears later on. [fa:v1] [continuing]
Return to the TOC

Principle Saito:
Runs Tsurugamine H.S. Big lips. Hates Koutarou, and will do anything to see Shindou die. [fa:v1] [ls:v23 (after having been KO'd by Yakuza, and kissed by Jason-chan, Saito disappears from sight.)]
Return to the TOC

Teruhiko Tenkouji:
The priest who tries to suppress crime in the school. Spends most of his time cleaning up the bodies that Koutarou leaves behind, and in trying to stop Shindou's "pervert behavior." Tenkouji is bald, but hates being called that -- he claims that he shaves his head because he's a priest. Excellent katana master, and a good bodyguard. Enjoys relaxing with a "lemon pack" on his face, which helps improve his skin color. [fa:v1] [continuing]
Return to the TOC

Beni Bara:
"Red Rose." Kind of a ninja-style joker. Works with the bad guys just to see what Koutarou can do. Has a strange relationship with Tenkouji. Usually fights while wearing a mask. Very beautiful, and deadly with throwing knives. Is later revealed to be the primary moving force behind a mysterious gang residing on campus. Also has a secret that Shindou discovers, to his own shock. HINT: Her name is a reference to the Rose of Versailles. [fa:v1] [ls:v59 (maybe disappears forever)]
Return to the TOC

Superintendent Watase:
In charge of the Tokyo Police Department, and is Mayumi's father. His wife is dead. Gruff, good-natured. Lots of scars on his face. [fa:v3] [continuing]
Return to the TOC

Tatsuya Yoshiokata:
A VERY handsome boy, who almost looks female. Has an IQ of 200, and always carries a fan. Is a lethal martial artist, and becomes the new leader of the school's decency league. He is eventually revealed to be the heir to an ancient school of dance that plans on causing the destruction of Japan. [fa:v10] [la:v59 (he dies from multiple causes)]
Return to the TOC

Shunbei Sadoya:
The school's number one fighter (so he likes to believe.) Likes wearing a paramilitary uniform, and fighting people with his whip. Under the eye patch worn over his left eye, Sadoya keeps his secret weapon -- a gag spring-loaded eyeball. [fa:v2] [la:v5 (locked in insane asylum)]
Return to the TOC

The Rijichou:
The school system director. A more elegant version of Mayumi's father. Beefy man with a white beard, heavy eyebrows, and a constant 'fu-fu-fu' laugh. Is at the school to escort Princess Kurara on the first day, and to pick suitable classmates to be her on-campus bodyguards. [fa:v5] [la:v9 (phased out)]
Return to the TOC

Princess Kurara:
Daughter of the king of oil-rich "Muua." A harmless airhead that is starting classes at the high school. [fa:v5] [la:v9 (returns home)]
Return to the TOC

Andre:
Kurara's gigantic, dumb, devoted bodyguard. [fa:v5] [la:v9 (returns home)]
Return to the TOC

Chris:
Kurara's smaller, professional guard. Probably from India, he starts out seemingly devoted to his charge, but has greater plans. Also comes into conflict with Tenkouji. [fa:v5] [la:v9]
Return to the TOC

Tamuraa:
Kurara's personal butler. About age 45, bald, and apparently very submissive. [fa:v5] [la:v9]
Return to the TOC

Kyoushirou Inamori:
Shindou's only student, and fellow pervert. Wears his long hair in a ponytail tied with a ribbon. Has good ninja technique, but is not subtle enough. [fa:v5] [ls:v59 (shacks up with Yurie Tenzen)]
Return to the TOC

Megumi Yoshiokata:
Tatsuya's younger sister, and a mean professional wrestler. Her long black hair is held in a pony tail, and she's the epitany of tom boys. Is first seen running out of Block D, being chased by the Black Teeth gang. [fa:v10] [la:v59. Dies in v45, but her ghost reappears until Tatsuya dies]
Return to the TOC

Kenji Kisaragi:
A long-haired kung fu master, who uses a long staff that breaks down into sections connected by a chain. Is easily Tenkouji's equal, and may be able to compete with Shindou. Goes to Block D to meet his older brother. Shindou always calls him "Hiromi". [fa:v10] [ls:v57 (still in the hospital)]
Return to the TOC

Hiromi Kisaragi:
Leader of the China Rose gang of transvestites, and Kenji's older brother. Hiromi asked Kenji to drop in to help in the fight against Cyclops. Rather pretty, with straight, shoulder-length blond hair. All of the China Rose gang wear Chinese restaurant-style dresses and flat shoes. [fa:v10] [ls:v57 (still visiting Kenji in the hospital)]
Return to the TOC

Nisemono:
"Imitation". Nisemono is a high school tough that wants to bring his gang to Block D, and make his reputation as "Shindou Koutarou." While he has the long, flowing black hair and t-shirt, he is actually shaved bald, too tall, and has a very square jaw. He's also a lousy fighter and a braggart. Shindou doesn't care what the guy's real name is, and keeps calling him Nisemono. [fa:v10] [la:v24 (phased out)]
Return to the TOC

Block D:
A section of the school grounds that was closed off by the authorities for being too dangerous. Is now the stomping grounds for over 500 violent delinquents. The normal method to get there is to take the school monorail to the Block D station, where you will be greeted by several gangs. If you manage to defeat the "gang of the day," you will be allowed to join up with one of them. Each gang has a uniform that all of its members wear. A very brutal place, and there are NO women there. [fa:v10]

Return to the TOC

Ryuuhei Sadoya:
Leader of the Cyclops gang, and Shunbei Sadoya's brother. They are twins, but where Shunbei's left eye is missing, Ryuuhei's right eye has been cut up. Ryuuhei is much more sadistic, and uses longer whips than his brother. In contrast, while Kenji gets nosebleeds after looking at naked women, Ryuuhei throws up when people talk about their love for one another. [fa:v11] [la:v16 (probably arrested)]

From Guide Part 2 (v17 - v29)

Tenzen Shikato:
A wrinkled little old man, who has been a student at the school for 50 years. He's a premiere sukebe, and has mastered the "one blow attack", which can blow away ANYONE, and paralyze the strongest man for 2 hours. AKA, Jijii (Old Man). Often seen riding on Momotarou's shoulder. [fa:v17] [continuing]
Return to the TOC

Ushirono Momotarou:
The #1 student in the Ouendan, and probably the meanest karate master in school. Tall, lean, long blond hair, no-nonsense, devilish eyebrows and heavy eyelids (looks like makeup), and a devoted follower of the old man. [fa:v17] [continuing]
Return to the TOC

The Ouendan:

Return to the TOC

Sayoko Akita:
Tenkouji's 12 year old fiance (Iinazuke: In an arranged marriage, the parents pledge to have the boy and girl marry when they are both still young, as a way of improving their financial or political situations. This is also what happened to Akane and Ranma in _Ranma 1/2_. The practice still occurs in modern-day Japan, but not as often as before.) Sayoko is cute, and a decent kendo artist, but is still too young to be able to compete against Tenkouji with a sword. [fa:v17] [ls:v58]
Return to the TOC

Yurie Shikato:
Shikato's beautiful granddaughter. She is very strong, having trained under the old man, and a good fighter. Initially just a love interest for Inamori, but later turns out to be an English teacher at the high school. [fa:v18] [ls:v57 (shacks up with Inamori)]
Return to the TOC

Group 7 Karate Club:
One of the many teams competing in the AHSAST, led by a guy with a broken nose, and a bleached lock of hair at the front of his head. While they may be a match for the Ouendan, they'd rather cheat first to improve their odds. The leader, Kimihiro Naono, isn't named until volume 19. Kimihiro's father, Oyaji, appears in v24, and is leads a Yakuza family. [fa:v18] [la:v24 (everyone is arrested)]

Gou-ichi's karate is very good, and he likes cats. This story is a flashback to show how Shindou got his dojo. [fa:v27] [la:v28 (goes to Kyuushu, and leaves his dojo to Shindou)]
Return to the TOC

Redei:
(Only has one name.) Redei is a based on Freddy, of the Nightmare on Elm Street movies. He loves knives, hates people, uses lots of gimmicks instead of being a talented fighter, and is terrified of cats. Looks just like Freddy, too. [fa:v27] [la:v28 ]
Return to the TOC

Anata:
The old Mugenryuu dojo captain. He has finally been released from jail. He wears a long heavy black coat, and a scarf over his nose and mouth. Absolutely massive, with a big bald head. Is powerful, but stupid (he is basically controlled by Redei.) When he gets angry, the veins on top of his head pop up:
and he looks like a melon. Anata is simply a huge monster. (Normally, "anata" is used by married couples as we would say "dear." However, Tatsuya put two kanji ("hole" and "field") together, to be pronounced as "Anata." Redei says "anata" as if he is the monster's wife.) [fa:v27] [la:v28]

However, one photo still made it's way to the campus bulletin board. So, Kyou has a permanent hate for Koutarou. kyou is also a brilliant young guitarist, who walks everywhere with his guitar.
