Spoilers! - Spoilers! - Spoilers!

The Bogey is the longest of Kory's Lost Side of Suburbia stories so far, and contains a fairly long cast list. Some of the members are recurring actors that have appeared elsewhere, others are new to this story. This page is dedicated to at least identifying the more important ones.

Protagonists

Biff Bombard Unruly school kid with too much free time on his hands, and a wild imagination. Favorite toy is the Quantum Eclipse Shutter paintball marker. His parents are usually gone during the day, so he'll occasionally get babysat by Margo Birdsfoot. Met Rufus in school, where they're in the same class. Partially succeeded in avoiding getting taken by Rafer Frost. However, on 130911 he voluntarily allows himself to be taken by Flimm in Rufus's place. On 140122, he is rescued by Margo, Twila and Rufus.
Rufus Cooper African-American kid. Studious, but very timid and unimaginative. His mother, Rebecca, works at Mikey's Big M, and his older sister, Reinetta, acts as his babysitter; she plays volleyball. His second sister, Twila, is 3 years younger, and was abducted by Rafer Frost a few days before Rafer unsuccessfully tries to get him and Biff. (Rafer leaves a yellow rubber ducky in Twila's place, and a stuffed bear for Rufus.) While Flimm does successfully take Rufus on 130904, he's released when Biff volunteers to take his place. Rufus turns out to be the one to primarily defeat Flimm by using the Aylosium dagger. He tries to return to a normal life, but that's up-ended when one of the other characters is revealed to be aligned with Flimm. In the end, he and Twila rescue Biff and things improve from there.
Margo Birdsfoot A young woman who lives a few houses down from Rufus. She occasionally babysits Biff, and also works at Wiseguy's Pizza Parlor. Her father works out of town, so she has the house to herself. Her reptile collection includes Stretch Armless, a boa constrictor, and Beezlebuf, the "pacman frog". Her boyfriend is Dobbs, who is not shown in the strip. She's a fan of the Dave Matthews Band, and her key memory is of her father singing "Moonshadow" to her. Given the option, she'd be in university now, halfway through a marine biology major. She previously made a cameo appearance in Derring-Do Dan. After Flimm is apparently defeated, on 140101 she says that she's joined Brockleport Community College to get a marine biology degree, and that she's going to give her menagerie to a zoo (Stretch Armless goes to Elijah and Dr. Periwether). She herself will be studying at the Republic of Kliiv under Dr. James M. Haynes.
Goatsucker(See "Non-Humans" below.)
Lucius Cole(See "Helpers" below.)

Antagonists

Rafer Frost What sets Rafer apart from the other main antagonists of this story is that he's the only human in the group. He had been imprisoned as a serial killer 30 years prior to the start of the story, but apparently was approached by Flimm to become his puppet. With the use of Flimm's powers, Rafer became a "taker of memories", preying primarily on children and young women. His trademark is to leave a toy in the place of his victim, while removing all other traces, including furniture, clothing, toys, and the memories of the victim held by friends and family. Rafer was defeated by Jerry Nelson, and seems to have remained an empty shell ever since. As of 140127, he's locked up in the Springshire Asylum for the mentally Flogged. Rafer has a very long, curved nose, and lean, angular body; his features are very shark-like.
C. Percival Trullus (See non-humans, below.)
Flimm (See non-humans, below.)
Leeshkin Slynderfell (See non-humans, below.)
Heckbender (See non-humans, below.)
West Bleekport Gang (See non-humans, below.)

Helpers

There are 4 specific people identified as hunting Takers. While it's implied that they are the Taker Hunters, the real Hunters are non-human. Instead, these four are part of a group chasing after Rafer Frost. What they share in common is that each of them lost someone close to them to Rafer, and still have their memories of the victim. At least two of the four are based on real people.

Bill Watterson Bill is the creator of the Calvin and Hobbes newspaper comic. Within this universe, his son, Marvin James, was abducted by Rafer Frost roughly 30 years prior, on Dec. 31. Melissa's memories were also taken, and Bill coped by channeling his energies into making Calvin and Hobbes. Bill has given up on finding Rafer, and has mostly stopped talking to the other three hunters. (Rafer left an orange stuffed tiger in Marvin's place.) Sphinx, one of the Watterson's cats, strayed into the neighboring woods and was then seen being shoved in a bag in Slynderfell's ice cream factory. In the end, both Sphinx and Marvin were rescued and returned to their home (131226).
Lucius Cole An African-American who lost his daughter, Regina, to Rafer. Lucius is a very hot-tempered, determined chaser, and will sacrifice those around him to get at Rafer. He was found by Margo locked up in the ship of Jamie Jones on Lake Erie, where the undead crew knew him as "Yellowjacket". He used to be the bass player for the band Roses and Revolutions (along with Kory Merritt's brother) and had worked at an electric company. He's a fan of Dave Matthews and the Bare Naked Ladies. Lucius is currently one of the main protagonists accompanying Margo. (There's no mention of what toy Rafer left in Regina's place.) He is defeated by Flimm's vine monster on 130729, but rescued soon after. As of 131222, he is off somewhere with Regina.
Jerry Nelson Former muppeteer working for Jim Henson. The real Jerry passed away in August, 2012, and the one in the story was in poor health when last seen. Rafer took his daughter, Christine, but there's no mention of what toy was left in her place. Rafer attempted to abduct Rufus and Biff a second time while in Jerry's cabin, leaving a muppet yip-yip doll on the floor for him, but Jerry woke up from Rafer's induced deep sleep and smashed Frost over the head with an acoustic guitar, defeating him. As of 131226, he's on the Sesame Street set with Christine.
Dr. Emilee Emeline Periwether The craziest and least-focused of the group, Periwether has a doctorate in Environmental Studies with a minor in Fisheries Management from Brockleport C.C. Her brother, Elijah, two years older than her, was Taken by Rafer at age 10 (no mention of the toy left in his place). She has spent the most amount of time researching Takers, and she's the one that has coined the term "Allseers" (see below) to refer to the beings from outside of our dimension. She's an acquaintance of the Mushpits, but not really a close one. She tells Margo that maybe one reason people remember those Taken by Flimm/Rafer Frost is that Allseers like the Mushpits messed with the minds of potential victims in order to make it easier to track Flimm's whereabouts. A sign of this tampering is her dream of hummingbirds, and possibly Biff's belief that he was experimented on by aliens. Her ability to be in the right place at the right time turns out to be a little too suspcious and she's eventually revealed to have known where Flimm was for several years. She's become enthralled with the whole "Allseers" thing, and has been working to keep both the Mushpits and Flimm to herself. After trying to assault Rufus and Margo with an umbrella knife, she's defeated by Elijah and Stretch Armless at Margo's house. Eventually, she collapses and begs Elijah for forgiveness (140115).

Non-Humans

Goatsucker A female chupacabra that gets captured and leashed by Margo while attempting to steal a sheep from a farm. She claims to have grown up in a desert before coming to the woods near Brockleport. Says that as a child, she was told stories of Takers to keep her in line. Dislikes being around people or being indoors, but does like frozen rats. She's come to be very loyal to Rufus, and tolerates Margo. Is currently one of the protagonists. She's lost one ear to L'Omino, and was assassinated by the West Bleekport Gang on 130520. Was last seen tied to a pole over the door of the Slynderfell ice cream factory.
Emmet and Mrs. Mushpit An elderly couple living on the outskirts of town, who are actually the earthly manifestations of two of the Allseers (see below) trying to capture and punish the Takers (see below). So far, Mrs. Mushpit hasn't been given a first name, and is the more irritable and bossy of the two. Emmet is powerful, but more petty - he's the one that took the Aylosium trinkets and turned the purified metal into a dagger, then demanded to be the one that weilds the dagger himself. Periwether tells Margo that the Mushpits have deteriorated far from what they were like when she first met them. After making the dagger, the disappear from the story. After Flimm is defeated, we're told that they fixed the memories that had been Taken by Flimm before returning to their original "home" outside of our universe (140123).
C. Percival Trullus An opportunistic little troll that has appeared previously in No Room, No Story. He will sell his services to the highest bidder, does nothing for free, and traffics in stolen Oscar trophies. Trullus lives under a bridge at the outskirts of Brockleport, and is familiar with several of the Takers, including Jennie Greenteeth and L'Onimo. He's credited as having bootlegged Bill Watterson's products and created "Pissing Calvin". Goatsucker accuses him of being closely tied all of the Takers, and he admits to acting as their eyes and ears. He has at least one finger dislocated or broken by Goatsucker, and then further mangled by Lucius.
Leeshkin Slynderfell Owner and sole propriator of The Slynderfell Cavalcade of Gustatory Glory ice cream factory, which is featured fairly heavily in No Room, No Story. His family came from outside our solar system, but Leeshkin has been on earth for longer than his detractors have been alive. He is married to Oggalulu. His factory uses bits and pieces of dogs, cats and unicorns as ingredients in his ice creams, which are a parody of Ben and Jerry's. One of those cats is Sphinx, Bill Watterson's missing calico. Eventually, he's shown to have a strong connection to Flimm. When Flimm is defeated, Slynderfell acts like his plug has been pulled. He later shows up in the Springshire Home for the Mentally Flogged (140124) along with Rafer Frost.

(See Takers, below.)
Heckbender One of the creatures inhabiting Halfrock Swamp. Heckbender was the feature antagonist in Kory's first LSOS story. It eats pretty much anything it finds in the swamp, but is partial to children, which it stores in a cave for consumption when the weather turns cold. In this sense, there seems to be a connection between it and the Takers. Trullus implies that Heckbender knows where Flimm is, making Heckbender The One that Flimm fears might rat him out to the Mushpits. Heckbender actually has something of a romantic streak, and is entraced by the stories from the books he's kept from his previous victims. He has only the one book he was able to save from the attack by the villagers in the first story - The Giver, by Lois Lowry. Since Goatsucker can't read, Heckbender recites The Giver from memory for her.
Phintesmo Blyme and the West Bleekport Gang Phintesmo and the WBP are villians, murders and thieves that figured heavily in No Story, No Room, and had a cameo appearance in Derring-Do Dan, the Adventure Man. While they are ruthless and blood-thirsty, working in The Bogey as "Problematic Persons Management" (assassins), they usually get out-tricked when in the spotlight. Last contracted to capture or eliminate Goatsucker. (They choose to kill her, instead.) They disappear after getting their payment from Slynderfell. The gang consists of the leader Phintesmo, the 8-legged Skabcraw, gar-faced Shmeevil, eel-necked Sleurth and helmet-headed Grulmet.

Allseers, Remainders, Takers

According to Dr. Periwether, and attested to by the Mushpits, there is a race of beings that lives outside of our universe and/or dimension that are highly logical and capable of manipulating the physical laws of nature. On the whole, they have remained content to simply sit and watch everything around them. However, a small splinter group has chosen to come to Earth and prey on the juicy morsels living here - primarily those full of life energy - children and young women. Periwether has dubbed the race "the Allseers", while the Mushpits refer to the splinter faction of outlaws as "remainders". Bill Watterson, Trullus and Lucius Cole call the outlaws "Takers". According to Periwether, the Takers have blended in to human society by emulating existing monsters from folklore. In order to act directly, the majority of Takers have assumed physical bodies, which are decaying, and trapping them in mortal form. Each of the Takers has something made from Aylosium, a strange metal that gives them their powers, but to which they are also very vulnerable. Almost half of the Takers seem to be animal derived or related.

Jenny Greenteeth Hag who drowns children that swim in rivers. Also known as: Peg Prowler, River Mumma, Pondweed Winnie.
Currently: Still in a river within walking distance of the Watterson house.
Aylosium: Necklace, which she gave to Margo.
Jamie Jones Master of the Great Lakes, and younger brother to the more famous Davy Jones. Suffers a major inferiority complex. Commands the crew of the ill-fated Edmund Fitzgerald. His main nemesis is the great sturgeon, G'urgeon.
Animal: His body is comprised of various fish and lake creatures.
Currently: On the Great Lakes.
Aylosium: Key, given to Margo by one of the crew.
L'Omino Italian for "little man", L'Omino is the coachman from the original Pinocchio tale. He runs the Happy Land of Toys and Pleasure, where he manipulates people's DNA to turn them into animals which he then sells to circuses or butchershops. He's defeated by the animals still in his livery.
Currently: Presumed killed.
Aylosium: Whip handle, given to Rufus by one of the donkeys.
Gevaudan's Beast A combination of a werewolf with the big bad wolf of Red Riding Hood fame, but pretty quickly defeated by Margo.
Animal: He's a werewolf.
Currently: Killed by Lucius.
Aylosium: Walking cane, taken by Lucius and given to Margo.
The Piper A variant of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, the Piper uses a fife to enthrall his victims in illusions consisting of their most important memories. In the case of Margo, it was her father singing "Moonshadow", for Lucius, it was Regina. At the same time, he attracts hordes of rats. If he's feeling murderous, he guides his victims into a lake or pond to drown. He had been working with the Witch, but was defeated by Goatsucker.
Animal: He looks like a big, skinny rat, due to drawing in the energies of the rats he's drowned.
Currently: Killed by some of the rats.
Aylosium: Fife, taken by Goatsucker and given to Margo.
Baba Yaga A mash-up of the Witch from Hansel and Gretel, and the Slavic Baba Yaga character. She lived in a delapitated house covered in rotting candy along with the Piper. The house has chicken legs, and Baba flies around in a big mortar and pestle. Her "teeth" are actually metal screws placed into her gums. She eats children roasted in her oven, but just wanted to capture Rufus and Biff to find out how they'd managed to thwart Flimm so many times. She escapes death at the hands of Lucius and walks away from the house while dragging her mortar.
Currently: Whereabouts unknown.
Aylosium: Screw tooth, given to Margo.
Flimm Flimm is the exception in the group. He's the strongest Taker because he doesn't have a body. While staying non-corporeal would normally make him easier to find by the other Allseers, Flimm has managed to keep himself hidden by using human puppets like Rafer Frost to do his bidding. Referred to as The Taker of Memories, Flimm doesn't eat his victims immediately. Instead, he prefers to savor their life energies slowly over a long period of time. When confronted by Rufus and Biff, he tries Taking Rufus, but Biff volunteers in his place. This show of selflessness is enough to turn Flimm vulnerable to Rufus' Aylosium dagger, which pierces Flimm's core, and he shoots, screaming, out of his cave to go hide in the trunk of the car used as Rufus' and Biff's hideout. He's finally bashed by Twila's lacrosse stick, and he seeps into the ground, leaving Biff behind him.
Currently: As of 140121, he had seeped into the ground near Biff and Rufus' hideout.
Aylosium: "Doesn't use the stuff."
