Geobreeders OAVs Summaries

Geobreeders was one of the earliest attempts at creating a "multi-media franchise", with different, but related, parts of the story being told in more than one media. While the majority of the story was in the manga by Itou, there was one side-story (Atomic Attack) and two OAV series. Atomic Attack describes how Vashuka went to Russia to get a nuke, and flows into the first OAV. "File.X - Rescue the Kitten", (AKA: "Get Back the Kitty" in the U.S. version) was in 3 parts and includes part of the story regarding the attempted recovery of the nuke. The 4-part "File.XX - Breakthrough" OAV acted as kind of a sequel, introducing the female gunslinger "Blue Shooting Star", Maki's rival for "fastest gun" in the underworld. "Blue Shooting Star" reappears in the manga in volumes 8 and 9. Both File.X and File.XX are part of the Geobreeders "canon". File.X fits roughly between volumes 5 and 6 of the manga, while File.XX is a little less fundamental to the plotline and can only be said to take place sometime between volumes 5 and 8.

At first, the Kagura crew charged into the occupied nuclear power plant (as described at the end of Atomic Attack), and were blasted out of the place by the tank stolen by the Cats. Later, Taba and Takami went to a department store to take care of a were-cat (the rest of the crew stayed in since it was raining). They ran into Hound and eventually sealed the were-cat.

However, once returning to Kagura's office, they discovered several talisman are missing. In order to prevent the Ministry of Welfare from putting pressure on Kagura, Taba was ordered to retrieve the missing tags or else his salary will be permanently suspended (while Takami bawled). While Taba is away, a couple of delivery people show up, who turn out to be Navy SEALs in disguise and blast away in Kagura's office. One of the SEALs then produced the missing tags and kidnapped Maya.

Meanwhile, Taba went back to the department store and ran into Narusawa (they still don't know each others name yet). Narusawa then showed several surveillance video pictures from the department store with three men dressed in military outfits. The same three men are also seen on the deck of a stranded Russian cargo ship just outside of Ayagane harbor. Taba was happy with the information and left, turns out Narusawa was ordered by Capt. Yashima to release the information to Kagura since his hands are tied. There's someone behind the scene preventing the JMSDF as well as the Maritime Safety Agency from investigating the Russian cargo ship.

When Taba finally went back to the office, he discovered Maya missing. He had no choice but to hire Kagura to get Maya back. Meanwhile, Maya was interrogated by Descartes (talking without a voice box). Descartes wants Maya to give him the date of arrival for "Nicholai". Maya refused to answer by turning into cat form, Descartes then tortured her by putting her in a pot of water...(wtf??) Maya tried to escape several times, but the place was well sealed and her attempt to send out a call for help through the computer was interrupted by their firewall.

Taba, Rando and Yuka boarded the Russian cargo ship. They found bullet holes on board which indicated that the ship was attacked. Then, rather than finding Maya, they encountered a large number of hostile were-cats who chased them around on the deck. Maki then showed up on a boat with her modified anti-tank rifle (now a machine gun) and gunned down were-cats here and there. Rando found explosives all over the ship; when she was trying to disarm the bombs, one of Maki's stray rounds destroyed her computer. Everyone abandoned ship and the ship was destroyed. As the client for the case, Taba must be responsible for all property damage per Kagura's standard contract (poor man...)

Just when they thought they lost all trace of Maya at their temporary office (at the family restaurant Akie's), Takami received an e-mail from Maya which included information about another cargo ship coming into Ayagane. Narusawa was seen outside of the restaurant watching them on a monitor.

When Kagura charged in to attack the cargo ship, Hound showed up and detained them. Narusawa was among the Hounds and she showed an apologetic gesture to Taba while the rest of the Kagura ladies get jealous. Since Hound's mandate states that they cannot take action unless they can confirm the presence of the were-cats, Yashima's chopper flew in low to try to get the were-cats to open fire on him. The were-cats kept their cool until the Kagura crew broke free and charged their ship. The were-cats open fired on Kagura and the Hounds, and Hound was ordered to take action.

Taba, Yuka, Maki and Yu boarded the ship. However, the US military showed up and attacked the cargo ship. Three Harriers then proceeded to strafe the bridge. One of the Harriers got too close and was taken over by one of the were-cats who ejected the pilot and then shot the other two Harriers down, causing a lot of damage for the Hound fleet as well. Yashima destroyed the fighter and sealed the were-cat. Taba and Yuka found a Russian SS-25 ICBM launch vehicle on board, which they assumed was what everyone was looking for. After learning this fact, Rando negotiated a contract with Hound to work together and take down the ship.

Despite everyone's best effort and lots of action, the ship still ran right into Ayagane harbor. The leader of the were-cats drove the launcher vehicle into the city. Kagura hijacked a taxi (who turned out to be the same cab driver from Vol. 2 and Vol. 15) and tried to stop the vehicle. When escape seemed impossible, the were-cat decided to launch the missile and take Ayagane, Kagura and the Hounds with him.

Capt. Yashima crashed his chopper into the missile to stop it, which did not detonate. Turned out there was no warhead on the missile, and all the cats on-board were just decoys. Kuro Neko showed up at Descartes's HQ and rescued Maya, (Descartes was seen lying on the floor; the next time he shows up in Vol. 7, he is talking with a voice box).

The Kagura crew returned to work along with Maya. In order to pay his fee for the contract, Taba had to work part time at Akie's too. After the ending credits, a crappy van was shown with a bunch of were-cats and a package with a radiation warning symbol on it.

The story then continues in Vol. 6.

File.XX - Breakthrough

(Image from amazon.co.jp, used for review purposes only.)

OVA File XX. In the beginning, Marvin appears in Gifu prefecture pursued by several hostile were-cats. Marvin was seen protecting a young child. He produced a pair of sawed-off shotguns and started blasting away.

At the same time, a group of cats under the command of a cat named Albert took over the DDK Gifu branch building and slaughtered the employees.

Meanwhile, the Kagura crew went back to their repaired office, enjoying the air conditioning in the hot summer day. Maki answered a call, surprisingly in a manner that Rando approve of. However, Maki could only hear someone playing harmonica and hung up angrily believing that it was a prank call. The person playing the harmonica turned out to be Blue Shooting Star, she then produced a sniper rifle from a violin case and shot off Maki's hat and punctured a hole on the wall. The gang immediately took cover, Yuka believed that it's Maicho newspaper and the vegetable man again. They waited but the only one coming through the door was Yu asking for a light. Everyone angrily told her to use the stove in the tea room. Everyone suddenly smelled gas and it turns out the bullet ruptured the gas pipe. Yu turned on the stove and ignited the gas, completely destroying the office.

With their office destroyed, Yuka announced that they will be relocating to their previous temporary headquarters (Akie's restaurant). However, Akie's had officially banned all Kagura members from ever stepping inside. Yuka then announced that they had no choice but to go to the emergency office (the crappy building in Vol. 6), only to find that building already demolished. The crew ends up camping in the park.

With only one computer (an iMac) and a tent at their disposal, the crew quickly accepts the first job that came to them via eMail from an anonymous client who only referred to himself as N.K. and they head toward Gifu. Blue Shooting Star discovered that Maki survived her hit attempt and followed. Blue opened fire on the Kagura crew on a busy freeway and the crew ran into a car driven by a were-cat that recognized them. Kagura managed to seal the cat and fend off Blue Shooting Star at the same time, but their borrowed van was destroyed.

The cats at the DDK building use the equipment to break into the prime minister's hotline and taunt him, causing an uproar in the Cabinet. Irie showed at a the cabinet meeting, despite being recognized by several of the cabinet members, he still got thrown out. In Hound's base, Captain Yashima stated that new equipment that's still under development will be delivered to the Hounds in large numbers. Hound has then been placed on alert. Narusawa was on vacation with her friend at a hot spring hotel and missed the recall order on her phone. Several unknown assassins tried to attack Irie when he's talking on the phone to Yuma but they were not able to harm Irie due to his armored Cadillac. Irie's own assassins/body guards effortlessly gunned them down and possibly innocent bystanders/witnesses as well.

The cats then launched their attack at the nation's online system, shutting down traffic lights, the stock exchange, the phone lines, etc. However, Albert's plan still requires the "key" from Marvin, so he leaves with the other cats holding the building and keeping the Hounds occupied. Marvin was seen, badly hurt, by himself, fighting more cats chasing after him, eventually collapsing.

The Kagura crew, now without a vehicle, wandered through the Gifu wilderness under a blazing sun with Maki leading the way. They continued down the same trail and running into the same cross road, finally realizing they are hopelessly lost. Yu became totally delirious, and wanders with the others holding what's left of a steering wheel muttering for a cigarette.

Everyone was so hungry that they resort to trying to hunt down wild rabbits but failed. Takami began talking about what happened in the movie "Alive." Blue Shooting Star appeared and try to shoot Maki, but Yu smelled her cigarette and showed up blocking her line of sight. Blue retreated while the others at Kagura were trying to break into an abandoned vending machine, not realizing that Yu had wandered off.

A little girl found the crew (minus Yu) and took them to her and her grandfather's place. The gang finally had a decent meal and hot bath before they realized that Yu was missing. Taba was forced to search for Yu since the night is not safe for girls. Maya noticed that the little girl had a little black cat she named Kuro and realized that he's a were-cat.

Yu wandered in the forest and got struck by a hotel delivery van. She was taken to the hotel which was where Narusawa and her friend stayed.

In Gifu city, rows of garbage trucks roam down the street without picking up any of the garbage. Hound has been mobilized and surrounded the DDK building. Ground and aerial DAX systems were deployed, and the assault teams were issued the IRDA TAC guns for the first time. Yoda expressed concern about issuing equipment that's still under development in large numbers, but Yashima told him not to ask too many questions and just focus on staying alive.

Hound breached the building and was initially successful in suppressing the were-cats. However, after triggering a booby trap tied to a surviving DDK employee, the cats began launching their counterattack. A cat kamikazed into one of the DAX trucks and disrupted the magnetic field. The Hound were forced to use the new TAC weapons. Irie was sitting on the building across the street in a Hawaiian shirt monitoring the Hound's progress and how the new IRDA TAC were performing. The cats then trigger the sprinkler system and shorted out the TACs. Hounds suffered heavy casualties in the assault and Irie decided he's seen enough. An M-unit were-cat was deployed inside the DDK control room and slaughtered all the cats. Hounds was completely surprised by the new cat and opened fire. However, bullets, TAC laser and sealing grenades had no effect on it. It then self destructed leaving Captain Yashima and the others wondering what's really going on.

Kuro turned out to be a were-cat and the young child that Marvin was protecting, but he couldn't speak and didn't have any memory. When Maya tried to interface with him to repair his memory, she was rejected and her hand was blasted off. Narusawa returned from the hot spring and saw news of the national online system crisis and realized that there was probably a recall at Hounds and decided to cut her vacation short. She opened her jeep door to find Yu sitting in the driver seat. Since she wasn't able to pull Yu out, Narusawa gave up and let her drive the jeep.

The old man that took the Kagura crew in showed them his secret stash of former Soviet weapons and ammo under his living room tatami. Blue Shooting Star finally caught up to them carrying two weapon cases. When Maki was playing with the old man's shotgun, it accidentally discharged and blew a hole next to Blue Shooting Star. Blue immediately returned fire, and hit one of the were-cats on the other side of the building looking for "the Key". They immediately returned fire, both sides just firing at each other through the old man and the little girl's house with the Kagura crew caught in the middle not knowing who the enemy were. Blue Shooting Star barged in and ran into Maki, but both of them ran out of ammo. Blue announced her intention for a duel since there can only be one Shooting Star. Then the house blew up when the cats threw a grenade that landed in the old man's old Soviet grenade collection. The little girl realized that Kuro was gone and Taba volunteered to look for him.

Albert and his goons discovered Marvin's body. Kuro, escaping the firefight at the house, ran right in front of Albert's car. They caught Kuro and took him to a nearby radio tower.

At the DDK building, Hound managed to trace one of the calls placed by the cats and discovered their location. Irie asked how the new weapons were performing and an angry Yashima pointed a TAC directly at his head before walking away. The remaining members gathered for another attack.

Yuka, Rando and Takami roamed in the woods and saw Narusawa's jeep driven by Yu. When they gave chase, they ran into a wild boar and begin running for their lives. Taba and Maya went to the radio tower to look for Kuro and got separated when Maya used her cat power and walked through a fence. Taba was discovered by Albert's goons and escaped using a logging cable. The boar chasing after Yuka and the others rammed into the jeep that Yu was driving and forced it down a steep hill.

Maki and Blue Shooting Star meet in a abandoned Lulu cat food factory to begin their duel. Before the coin tossed by Blue Shooting Star could land, Narusawa's jeep and the log that Taba was sitting on crashed into the factory at the same time. Yuka, Rando and Takami ran into the factory with the boar in hot pursuit, forcing Maki and Blue Shooting Star to drop their duel and run for their lives as well. Taba was surprised to see Yu and Narusawa when Albert's goons came into the factory and started shooting. Yuka led the wild boar to the were-cats and decided to let them deal with it. Everyone then hides in a container before one of the cats breaks in and was immediately taken down by Yoda and his men who arrived just in time.

Narusawa and Taba then armed themselves with the new TAC weapons (without permission) and went back to the radio tower to look for Maya and Kuro by themselves. Taba said she didn't have to go with him, but Narusawa said since she needed to write a report, she might as well get the whole picture. She then said that they always seemed to run into each other in unusual circumstances. They stormed in and found Maya tied up, and Kuro in half cat half human form hooked up with wires.

Albert then showed up with a gun and held Narusawa hostage. Albert recognized that Taba was the witness chosen by Kuro-neko. He then revealed that Kuro was the product of Kuro-neko's plan, and his own final plan was to use Kuro to take control of a communication satellite passing over and upload a program that will awaken every cat in Japan. Kuro started screaming when the program began uploading, then Maya as well as all the other cats all over the country started glowing and screaming of pain. Narusawa broke free from Albert and fought with him before getting knocked down.

Irie then suddenly showed up on the monitors and happily announced that Albert's plan is over. Irie then stated that the Russian government had also agreed to provide assistance due to last year's incident. It then showed the Mir Space Station being controlled by one of the M units and crashed straight into the satellite, disrupting the transfer and stopping Albert's plan.

The satellite then lost control and crashed into the atmosphere right on top of the Gifu mountain where everyone was. Yuka was about to enjoy some MRE ration provided by Yoda, Maki and Blue Shooting Star were about to have another duel. The satellite crashed and blew everyone away, though everyone miraculously survived.

Taba confronted Albert on the roof of the destroyed radio tower. Albert asked why Taba, who's only the witness, would interfere in his plan. Taba stated that he's only a salary man that couldn't stand people using innocent kitties for their own goal. Albert was then sealed with the help of Captain Yashima flying the Barracuda. The tower then collapsed and Taba fell into a nearby dam that's under construction with Maya and Narusawa watching in horror. The dam then collapsed and washed him down the stream and flush down the rest of the Kagura crew that survived the satellite strike and were playing in the water.

The satellite crash was covered up as a meteorite strike. The old man's place was completely destroyed, but a natural hot spring was discovered at the spot where his house used to be, so he's happy that it may help revitalize the local economy. A near-crazed Blue Shooting Star used an anti-material rifle to take out Maki once and for all. Her shot ruptured a natural gas line, which ignited when Yu lit her cigarette, completely destroying the hot spring.

In the end, Kagura sent a reply eMail to their client N.K. stating that they will not be able to fulfill the contract. N.K. turned out to be Kuro-Neko. He turned off the computer and walked off.

End Credits roll...

Albert later reappears in Vol. 11, rebuilt into the M4.
