Dark Hair Captured

Characters and Summary for Volume 5

(There seems to be a misprint in my copy of this book. Normally, the front inside cover flap has a sketch of Mita, and a short comment. This time, the sketch is there but the comment is missing.)

Avalanche Another one of the four Saints. Each Saint has his or her own kingdom, which is identified by direction. Avalanche in the East Saint. He looks like an ancient rock statue.
Somersault Somersault The South Saint. Somersault is an incredibly beautiful, vicious woman with a tendancy to wear very tight clothing that makes her look bird-like. She is also a youki princess, and had taught Moonsault everything that Moonsault knows. Has pink hair, and purple eyes, in one of the color drawings of her.
Splash Splash and Mountain The North Saint. Splash looks like a very attractive young boy (no more than 15.) He has light-colored hair, regal-robes and clothing, and ear ring studs in both ears. Later on, he is shown to be a Spect Master.
Mountain Splash's little pet. Mountain is a cross between a gerbil and a sparrow. Its favorite food seems to be some kind of berry.
Mayer Mayer A big, drunk priest with lines tattooed on his bald head. Wears long flowing robes, and walks around barefoot. In fact, he is a Spect Master sent to kill Captured. He is a level 18 Spect Master, and his Spector is a very nasty-looking fanged robot named "Roar".
Pyramid One of Splash's underlings. Nobody important yet, but is identified by name.

Volume 5 Summary

Chapter 11 Yoku wakaru Kyapuchuudo
Captured's Understanding

Captured is relaxing in the waters of an onsen (hot spring spa). His fingers have been reattached and the hole in his chest seems to have been completely healed (his fingers still tingle though.) Manji shows up to ask how he's doing, and to add comic relief when Camel comes in wearing a very skimpy swimsuit. Cap pretends to be unaffected by her outfit, but he suffers massive nosebleeds, anyway.

This chapter is really just a recap, where Manji explains to Cap what had happened up to this point, and Cap tells us about Spectors. Camel has been enlisted as a "reader service", and is told to pose in an appealingly "etchi manner". Manji and Cap give a very mechanical performance, and Cap gets lost (Manji has to pull out the script and show Cap where his next line starts.)

Everything is fine (and very silly) until Cap mentions the defeat of Full Nelson. This brings Manji back to reality, and he gets frightened about what will happen next. Cap explains that he's trying to change the world, and didn't have much choice in offing the dirty old man. Manji counters saying that none of the people on these Land Stars, including Camel, like humans. Manji continues, describing what Camel used to be like, and she pulls out a bunch of daggers and prepares to kill Manji from the background. Moonsault strides in, and announces to Captured that she has to kill him now. Unfortunately, she's entered the wrong spring, and is talking to two wrinkled old men.

Chapter 12 Ruten (Parts 1 - 5)
Changes (The more things change, the more they stay the same.)

We start out the next storyline with Moonsault yelling at Cap to stop trying to run away and come back and fight. Cap yells out that he'd love to fight her, as Camel and Manji restrain the boy and fly away in the blimp. Moonsault announces that she'll hunt him down and kill him, and Plancha is in tears of joy to see her mistress returning to her normal murderous self.

The other 3 Saints are introduced -- Avalanche, Moonsault, and Splash. A bounty is put on Captured's head, and the scum of the Land Stars set out to kill Cap to collect the money. A week passes, and Manji is exhausted from the fighting, and Moonsault's absence. Cap is overjoyed, having killed 999 bounty hunters, and Camel loves having Cap to herself again. One more hulking bounty hunter shows up, and Cap tells him to go away -- Cap does not want victim number 1000 to be someone weak. He bats the hunter unconscious. Another hunter appears, and Cap hopes the guy has some secret weapon that makes him really strong; the guy doesn't and gets batted unconscious. Manji states that Cap may be strong, but Mother's servants might be even stronger, so Cap should be more careful; Cap bats Manji unconscious. Manji argues with the boy, and Camel seems to take Manji's side, but she's actually just getting them to calm down so she can start working as Cap's cheerleader.

Splash is now introduced as a boy that seems to be nothing more than an imperious bratty prince. He says that losing Full Nelson makes his chest hurt. He orders Mayer to be sent out, and is assured that Mayer, being a level 18 Spect Master, will have little trouble defeating level 7 Captured. Then, as Cap is batting yet another gorilla, a drunk old priest wobbles up, asking to be allowed to fight Cap. The boy tells the old fool to go away, but the guy shows that he has a secret weapon -- he is a Spect Master. He activates his ring, and Roar turns into a sectional sword. The sword can expand to any length, and attack in any direction up to 50 feet away. The drunk gives his name as "Mayer", and wishes permission to kill Cap as punishment for Full Nelson's death. Cap gets really excited at being able to fight another Spect Master, and Manji points out that Roar is level 18. Cap is level 7, so... Cap finishes the sentence "so stop trying to fight, and run away." Cap's been hearing that a lot, and he's tired of it. He wants Manji to cheer for him. Manji asks who'd be stupid enough to do that against an obviously better opponent, as Camel is waving her pompoms in the background. Cap demands the old man to show his stuff. Mayer takes a drink, and tells Roar, "He says, 'Come On'. You hear that, Roar?"

The sword lashes out like a snake, and chases Cap through the ruins of some city, while Mayer stands in place and sips from his bottle. Part of an old building crashes around Cap, knocking him down. Then, Roar manifests himself as a tall ugly cyborg that towers over Mayer. (Meanwhile, Splash is monitoring the battle from a view screen in his palace.) Cap gets bashed around a bit more, complaining to himself that Mayer's distance attacks don't allow him to get within striking range. Roar insult's General, saying that the lower level Spector doesn't have a chance against them. Cap asks if General has a response, and General manifests himself as well (Cap didn't know General could do this.) General answers back that he and Cap will win anyway. Cap likes this answer, and dashes forward. Roar spits out acid, and chases the boy around again. Roar isn't impressed, and again states that the better Spector/Master team will win.

As Mayer is taking another sip, Cap tells the old drunk that he'd prefer to fight him sober, and full out. Mayer replies that Cap couldn't handle him that way, since Roar is 5 to 6 times stronger than General. Cap claims to be 2000 times stronger, and slams Mayer backwards. Mayer is stunned, and Cap tells him that this is why he wants Mayer to stop drinking. Mayer brushes himself off, and agrees. While, from a distant building top, Somersault thinks that a boy that can make Mayer get serious is very interesting.

In a different city, a young woman is evading two men in black, wondering who they are. A third shows up behind her, and she asks him why the three Spect Masters are destroying her city. The Spect Master kills her, replying that it's on orders from Mother. The Spect Masters gather together, complaining that it had taken 2 hours to kill 300,000 people. One adds that it'd only have taken 10 minutes if Mayer were here.

Mayer rushes forward, surprising Cap. Turns out that Mayer is a very good in-fighter as well. There is much sword play, and Cap is loving every second of it. He is discovered by Moonsault, who intends to kill him right there. She is interrupted by a voice. Moonsault's handmaiden starts insulting the intruder, sees Somersault standing there, and immediately panics and apologizes a lot. Somersault greets her student, and the handmaiden goes into hysterics over the beautiful image presented by two such powerful women together in a "two-shot." Moonsault apologizes for lagging in her duties and fraternizing with the enemy, and Somersault forgives her. They go into another close pose, and Plancha goes hysterical again.

Cap and Mayer keep fighting, and having fun (Mayer hasn't had a battle like this in 14 years.) Mayer suddenly pulls back and kneels in respect to Somersault. Camel and Manji panic at seeing Moonsault again. Moonsault insults Cap, and the boy claims that she's behaving just like Standpeed. However, Cap is not the only garbage to be taken out -- Somersault spits out her own Youki snake, and it slices Moonsault up a bit. Cap can't understand what is happening, and Manji tells him that Moonsault had betrayed Mother by spending time with the humans, and so must be punished by death. Moonsault is in pain and shock, and Somersault laughs at the blood running down her student's face. Moonsault asks if she has to fight Somersault, and is told "Oh, you catch on very fast. Idiot." Moonsault vows revenge for the insult.

Mayer launches Roar again to remind the boy of the task at hand. Cap is happy to resume fighting again. Plancha pleads with Somersault to stop this, and the Saint's reply is "shut up." Plancha gets nailed in the stomach by the youki snake, and is caught by Manji before she hits the ground. Plancha objects to being touched by a human, so Manji tosses her aside and tells Camel to bandage her up (Plancha lost a lot of muscle and blood.) Moonsault gets pissed at this, and launches her own snake. Somersault is amused that her student would think she'd have a chance against the master.

Mayer takes a break from slashing at Cap, to praise the boy at being a worthy opponent (which pleases Cap no end.) Mayer is sad, because under other conditions he believes that the two of them could be friends. But, it is fate that causes them to fight to the death. Cap hates the word "fate", and angrily resumes the attack. Moonsault's grey snake is being defeated by Somersault's black snake. And, Roar takes the time to contact General for a secret meeting. In a sunlit astral plane, Roar asks General why the Spector has chosen such a weak person to be its master. Roar continues, saying that the only goal for a Spector is to get stronger, which General can't do with Cap as his master. In fact, Cap is a detriment to General himself. General replies that Roar wouldn't understand a spoken explanation.

Moonsault is losing, and Mayer says that Cap's death is destined to happen. "Destiny" is another word Cap hates, and he attacks full-out. Mayer gets cleaved from shoulder to hip, and collapses. Plancha asks why Manji and Camel are saving her life. Thing is, both Cap and Manji state that they don't hate Plancha or Mayer. Somersault notices that Mayer is down, and Cap asks what she's going to do next. Moonsault yells out insults at Cap, demanding that the boy not try to save her. She gets pretty vicious, and Cap repeats the fact that Moonsault has become just like Standpeed. And, since he's had to defeat Standpeed and Full Nelson in an attempt to change the system that Moonsault is a part of, he won't try to save Moonsault either (meaning, the world will be a better place without her.) Moonsault thanks him for this (it makes her pride feel better.)

Somersault wipes the floor with Moonsault. And, in Splash's palace, the young Saint receives the news that Mayer is dead. It pains him much, and he calls out for Pyramid to set up a demonstration across the planet, so that Mayer's death won't be for naught. However, Mayer is still alive, and with the Spector's healing powers will be able to move again in half a day. Mayer demands to know why he's been allowed to live. After a while, Cap replies that Mayer had been right -- if they'd met under different conditions, they could have become friends. So, he plans to change the world to allow this to happen. Roar sees this purity of spirit, and now understands why General has allowed Captured to be his master.

During this, Moonsault's black youki giant has been pummeled by Somersault's bigger white youki giant. Her left arm has been ripped off, and large globs of meat have been chewed off of her legs. Cap starts to move forward, and Moonsault screams for him to stay away. Plancha is in tears of panic that her mistress is going to die. Camel assures her that everything will be ok. Finally, the black youki snake has Moonsault by the neck, and Somersault is about to have Moonsault killed. Cap prepares to leap forward, but Moonsault again yells at him, calling him trash that must be removed from this universe, and she'd rather die than be saved by him. Cap remembers the villians that he has faced before, and can not allow them to keep acting they way they do.

Cap springs forward, cuts the head from the black youki snake, and stabs Somersault in the shoulder with General. Camel tells Plancha "see?" To herself, Camel says that this is why she loves the boy.

Moonsault demands an explanation, but Cap can't give her one. He apologizes for his intrusion; he saved Moonsault despite himself. Moonsault's heart starts speeding up, and she tries to understand the new emotion that she is feeling now. Somersault prepares to punish Cap, but a messenger satellite appears and whispers to her. Somersault is amused. Seems that before being killed, Captured is to suffer "a living hell." Somersault disappears.

Splash is televised on the Land Star Universe-wide TV system. The Saint tells everyone that Captured has now killed Full Nelson and Mayer. This is a crime that must be punished. Because of this, not only Captured, but EVERYONE that he has come into contact with, will be killed within the following week. (There are pictures of Franken, Steiner, Lana Urakan, the rabbit people, and the guy that sold the information about Standpeed to Camel.) Moonsault is still trying to come to grips with her feelings. Camel is happy to be walking beside Cap.
